Your Marketing Needs An Extreme Makeover

MOVE. THAT. BUS.

(That’s a sentence you can hear.. right?!)

We’ve been looking back at those huge ’90s TV makeover moments. Big reveals. Big reactions. A brand new look appearing overnight.

Reminded us a biiiiit of marketing… Just with less wild room designs and bad haircuts.

Brands love a transformation moment, that day or two of attention you get when you launch a rebrand, the influx of comments when you post your first viral video, the moment someone notices the rare emoji you added to your copy 🪇

It’s all hype until someone makes a wrong move.

Not every brand needs that full teardown and rebuild approach. Sometimes it can make your audience go running.

To put it in extreme makeover terms: They’ve said they like dinosaurs and now you’ve put their bed in a T. rex’s mouth

Here’s our guide on big brand changes.

When to take the leap and when what you have just works.

Sometimes the change lies in what you do instead of how you do it

When you’ve got a format you’re comfortable with, it can be scary to leave that behind.

What if your audience flees? What if it flops? What if you’ve put budget behind something that doesn’t work?

Having the guts to take that leap is what separates the best brands from the ones stuck in the past.

Think of it like channel hopping. Going from late-night teleshopping to Nickelodeon classics. Both hold attention in completely different ways.

The trick is knowing exactly who you are at your core. If you try something new in an authentic way, that’s when you get the buy-in from your followers.

The brands getting this right are exploring what sticks and shaping it into something consistent.

M&S showed that they could shift their content by turning their strategy to long-form content last year. By launching their Love That YouTube series, they reached a new, younger audience that only knew them as the place their nan gets the good biscuits from.

Time for the big reveal.

Visual identity is usually the first thing people reach for when they feel stuck. New colours, new type, new look across the board. It feels productive. It feels bold.

And sometimes it works.

But sometimes it feels like a desperate attempt to seem exciting.

A strong visual evolution ALSO comes with growth, sharpened positioning and values at its core. It’s alllllll about hitting that sweet spot between innovation and brand recognition

The best rebrands don’t feel like a paint thrown on a blank canvas.

Take Microsoft as an example. Last year they updated their Office icons for the first time since 2018. Instead of making them completely new and unrecognisable, they opted for subtle changes that felt fresh but ultimately reflected the core branding.

And they did it with PURPOSE.

Each new icon was curved around the edges with more vivid colour gradients to improve legibility and reduce visual noise.

You don’t always need a brand new 24-hour makeover mansion. Sometimes you just need better lighting and a bit of confidence in how you show it off.

COKE MULTIPLAYER GAME

Now for the bit people notice without realising.

Tone of voice shapes how everything lands. It’s the difference between sounding like everyone else and actually standing out.

Brands evolve. Audiences shift. Culture moves on. The way you spoke a year ago might not hit the same now.

HOLD YOUR HORSES. That doesn’t mean throwing your personality out the window and buying a shiny new one. We’re talking about refining your voice. Giving your metaphorical house a new coat of paint and maybe a fancy lamp or two, without sacrificing the foundations it’s built on.

You’ve gotta make sure every word still feels like you.

The worst thing you can do here is panic and copy what’s trending. Forced humour, borrowed slang, a sudden personality switch. People see riiiiiight through it.

A good voice update feels intentional and thought out.

So What Should I Do?!

That’s the question on everyone’s lips. If it’s so easy, what should I do then?!

Only you know that.

… Ok, we know, that’s a cop out answer.

But it’s TRUE. If you truly know your brand inside and out, you’ll know what needs to change and what should remain a staple.

Here’s some questions you should ask yourself if you wanna reflect on your current brand:

Is it hitting the right audience?
Does it feel authentic?
Is it standing out in the market?

If the answer to any of those is NO… It’s time for a change

Simon's Hot Take

TL;DR: You don’t need a complete transformation to make your impact. In fact, sometimes that’s the laziest way to do it. A good makeover has actual thought behind it and builds on a strong base.
