The Magic Behind Out-Of-Home Ads

Wander | May ’26

Step right up! Gather round folks! Prepare to be AMAZED!

No, seriously. We’re serving up some actual magic today… in the form of out-of-home ads.

Billboards, bus stops, train stations, giant building takeovers… the ads quietly casting spells while you’re busy getting on with your day.

And with the weather warming up, more people are out and about. People are flooding the parks, pubs and gardens pretending the weather isn’t your typical British drizzle.

Which means more eyeballs outside.

Why does this even matter, we hear you shouting at the screen. WELL, the average person sees 6,000-10,000 advertisements every day. Every. Single. Day.

The big question is: Why do some OOH ads cut through the noise while others fade into the background?

Ever stared blankly out of a train window and suddenly found yourself craving a McMuffin?

That’s nooooo coincidence.

Some of the smartest out-of-home ads are sneaky in their messaging. Instead of putting their logo front and centre and offering a service or product, they use imagery that sets up camp in your subconscious.

Take McDonalds, their breakfast campaign featured close up photos of their McMuffin breakfast sandwiches, colour graded and shot in a way that makes hungry morning commuters feel like their lives wouldn’t be complete without one.

A little visual nudge to drive a craving and before they know it they’re in the drive through.

The best ads get into your brain without shouting at you. Audiences are bored of hard sells, they want to feel like consumption was THEIR idea.

Any good magician has mastered the art of making you look twice.

The same thing applies to a great ad.

Placement can completely change how something lands. How do you shape creative to an environment or enhance a setting?

We’re talking smart campaigns where multiple billboards work together to tell a story, or brand collabs almost feel like a conversation between bus stop features.

It’s the marketing equivalent of a magician cutting their assistant in two. You stop, stare and wonder how they pulled it off.

The best magicians move fast and keep you engaged.

You see the ball under that cup? No you don’t. BOOM, it’s now up my sleeve. Wait a second, it isn’t even a ball anymore, it’s a dove!

If there’s one industry that moves at lightning speed, it’s marketing. Trends change, the cultural zeitgeist never stands still, audiences get BOOOOREDDDD.

This applies to digital, but it also means that out-of-home ads aren’t as static as they used to be. We live in a world of changing digital billboards and new posters on top of old posters on top of old posters.

When something is relevant, your window of opportunity is small.

Spotify nailed it for the 2026 Grammys, plastering baby pictures of the Best New Artist nominees on billboards, a sweet celebration that prompted new streams on their platform. It fit the moment, it hit the cultural trends and it felt authentic.

…And it was only a small drop in the ocean of fast-moving out-of-home ads

And now for the grand finale!

The moments when subtle doesn’t cut it and you throw out all the stops to get that final round of applause.

There’s countless examples of brands that have nailed the spectacle, here’s a few of our recent faves:

Pokémon’s giant 3D projections on the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building
The 4D Disney+ water installation for season two of Percy Jackson and the Olympians
Ikea ‘wrapping’ Copenhagen’s building scaffolding in flat pack boxes

You know you’ve nailed a showstopper moment when it gets people to stop, whip out their phone and make it go viral online.

So there you have it, a peek behind the curtain on why some out-of-home ads are so impactful.

From subtle visuals that stick in your brain to big, bold moves that force you to stop in your tracks. The landscape of these ads is changing, but it’s clear the impact you can make is still strong.

With audiences seeing up to 10,000 adverts a day, the key is authenticity, quick thinking and outside-of-the-box brands that don’t shy away from being bold.
