Hot Take: Not Every Trend Is For You
Wander | February ’26
Trends are louder than ever.
They move fast, burn bright and disappear just as quickly.
So how do you even know if one is for you?!
… Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered, just keep reading and you’ll be hopping on the right trends at the right time like it’s second nature.
You know the moment.
A sound starts popping up on TikTok.
A format floods Reels.
LinkedIn suddenly has a new “hook formula” everyone’s copying.
Within 48 hours, it’s everywhere (and we mean everywhere, even your Nans seen it somehow)
The question lands in the team chat:
“We should totally do this, right?!”
Because the pressure is constant.
Relevance feels like a game of survival. Silence feels like you’re falling behind. It’s hard to see past the urgency when your competitors are already posting the newest trend while you’re still trying to understand last weeks.
We look at viral content and think:
Trending = visibility = an audience = business goals MET, everyone can go home!
But the truth is going viral over and over again can dilute your positioning.
If you’ve spent years building a brand voice, losing it is no small deal.
Let’s start with the reality: trends work for a reason.
Algorithms reward relevance and velocity. If a format is gaining traction, platforms amplify it. They want users to stay in familiar, high-performing loops.
Trends also:
- Reduce creative friction (the format already works)
- Lower decision fatigue (the structure is there for you)
- Increase discoverability (you’re riding existing momentum)
- Deliver short-term spikes in reach and engagement
Look at the “photo dump” era of Instagram.
A behind the scenes image, an out of context meme, a photo of a dog (because there was always a dog)
Brands that participated early saw strong engagement because the format felt native and personal.
Or the wave of “day in the life” TikToks, businesses humanising their teams saw real traction because it aligned with platform culture.
Participation builds reliability with the algorithm.
But here’s the key: trends are tools.
And tools are only effective when used intentionally.
Now the other side.
We know by now audiences aren’t passive anymore, they’re hands on when it comes to the content they consume and the brands they support.
When a luxury brand suddenly jumps on a chaotic meme format with no tonal alignment, the disconnect from their core followers is obvious.
When a serious B2B consultancy uses a trending comedic audio that has nothing to do with its expertise, it feels forced.
It might generate impressions, but it also creates confusion.
Short-term reach can come at the cost of long-term positioning.
Your audience is asking:
- Is this consistent?
- Is this authentic?
- Does this add anything?
If the answer is unclear, you’re in trouble.
Before jumping on a trend, there’s some things you should ask yourself. Here’s our handy list of questions to keep in mind:
- Does this align with our brand identity?
Would this feel natural if someone saw it out of context? - Can we add value or a distinctive perspective?
If you’re just replicating it, you’re competing in noise. - Will this still make sense on our grid in six months?
If someone scrolls back, will it strengthen your positioning or feel like a random detour?
If a trend passes those three filters, go ahead and explore, get lost in the jungle that is virality.
If not, restraint IS your strategy.
Trend-led content is:
- Reactive
- Time-sensitive
- Built for immediate engagement
- Designed for momentum
Brand-led content is:
- Strategic
- Consistent
- Built around clear positioning
- Designed for long-term recognition
The strongest brands bring the two together in beautiful harmony, but brand always leads.
Two massive brands are already leading a charge when it comes to viral marketing.
They’re big, they’re recognisable, you’ve seen them in a million LinkedIn posts…
That’s right, we’re talking Duolingo and Ryanair
There’s a reason they make everyones lists of top brands to look at when creating viral content. They participate in trends constantly, but every execution filters through their chaotic personas. The trend never replaces the brand.
Their presence thrives on trending sounds and formats, but every piece is undeniably them. The humour reinforces their positioning instead of diluting it.
Think about when heritage brands suddenly adopt humour and memes after spending most of their lifetime with a tone of voice straight out of Bridgerton. The audience doesn’t buy it.
Your personality and brand
The brands winning right now aren’t the fastest to trends.
They’re the clearest about who they are.
TL;DR: You can’t ignore culture, the trends happen whether you participate or not. The scroll will always move fast, the algorithm will always be hungry. Knowing who you are and participating with intent and authenticity is your key to success.
