Is Digital The New Television?!

Wander | February ’26

Television used to own attention.

Big screens, big budgets, big cultural moments. Brands planned years around a single slot. If you landed prime time, you were winning the game.

Now the screen is smaller, closer and always on. Stories live in pockets. Algorithms decide what plays next. There’s more choice (and more competition) than ever.

With audiences moving towards streaming and digital video, has internet killed the video star?

GHD Character selection

Traditional TV taught the industry how to tell stories properly.

Narrative arcs. Emotional payoff. Visual craft. The power of repetition. The idea that a brand could build familiarity over time rather than shouting once and disappearing.

That legacy still matters. High-production television campaigns continue to shape culture, signal credibility and create shared moments in a way few channels can. When brands show up on TV, it still means something.

THORPE PARK PUZZLE GAME

Platforms like YouTube didn’t replace television, they introduced it to the digital age.

No schedules. No fixed slots. No one-size-fits-all programming. Audiences decide when, where and how long they watch.

The remote control has been replaced by scrolling thumbs.

For brands, this changes everything. Distribution becomes flexible. Feedback is instant. Performance can be measured in the most specific ways. Stories have the space to evolve as they go.

The production values may vary, but the expectations don’t. People still want to be entertained, informed or moved. They just expect it faster and on their terms. Audiences are less passive than ever and the brands winning are the ones leaning into the change.

COKE MULTIPLAYER GAME

One of the biggest shifts is how brands show up.

Instead of one-off spots, we’re seeing series, formats and recognisable worlds. Content that builds familiarity rather than chasing virality. Viewers feel part of something when they show up.

Relationships are being built between channels and viewers. The comment section becomes the new living room conversation. Creators become TV channels in their own right.

A brand that gets this in a big way is Footasylum. Their YouTube series ‘Locked In’ featured online talent confined to one location with no tech… Think Big Brother meets influencers.

It’s part reality show, part cultural deep dive, all designed for bingeable digital storytelling. The series proves retail content doesn’t need to feel like a product push. Done right, it can hook, entertain and keep your audience coming back, week after week.

Footasylum saw the potential of digital storytelling and nailed it.

ROWNTREE TREASURE

When you really look at it, digital video is just traditional TV in a different font.

Influencers are your beloved series regulars, confessional ‘storytimes’ are your structures plots, recurring online episodes begin to feel like seasons of a show, sponsored segments replace your ad breaks.

With statistics showing that YouTube is being accessed by more Brits than the BBC (51.9 million VS 50.9 million) it becomes harder to ignore the need to produce content with digital in mind.

The biggest mistake any brand can make is seeing the digital shift as a threat, instead of an opportunity to uplift and transform their strategy.

So… What now?!

What does this mean for brands now?!

Budgets are being rethought, not reduced. Production is becoming modular. One strong idea can live as a long-form film, cut into episodes, reshaped for Shorts and extended through social conversation.

Television still delivers spectacle. Digital delivers momentum.

Prime time is now whenever your audience presses play.

The smartest strategies don’t choose between them. They design for both, letting each channel do what it does best while telling one cohesive story.

Simon's Hot Take

TL;DR: Television set the standard for storytelling. Digital video changed how and where we watch it. The brands winning now understand both. Build stories people choose to press play on, show up consistently and treat digital like the cultural space it is, not just another channel.
