      Welcome to Marketing 101.

Yep, we’re taking you BACK to school this month… because your marketing is useless without the basics being SPOT ON.

Lately marketing has been aaaalllllllllll about spectacle and viral moments. They grab headlines but without the right foundations they fall flat.

This is your crash course in the basics, the stuff that quietly makes campaigns work looooong after the viral moment has faded. Think of it as a guidebook to creating impactful campaigns and building a presence that sticks.

Take a seat and grab your notebooks, class is in session 👀

      GHD Character selection

Just like in a drama class, you’ve gotta play a part in the marketing world.

This means knowing your brand inside and out. Just like a character in a play, your brand has values and messaging that shapes your behaviour. The strongest brands let these take centre stage.

When your messaging is consistent your audience believes the act… mostly because it isn’t really an act at all. It’s about letting your true vibes shine through

Audiences can spot a fake performance a mile away. If your brand values don’t line up with what you’re putting out there it feels forced and people switch off.

The most successful campaigns are rooted in a clear sense of self: brands that know their character, stay consistent and let their real voice come through.

      THORPE PARK PUZZLE GAME

Plotting out your audience is a step you can’t afford to skip. Marketing that works knows EXACTLY who it’s speaking to.

That might mean going broad, like tailoring a campaign to an entire region… or zooming allllllll the way in on niche communities with specific habits, cultures and subcultures.

The trick is knowing where your audience “lives” (both literally and online) and shaping your marketing so it lands.

From postcode to personality type, you need a mapped out audience to get your messaging to the right people and get them to stop, listen and engage.

      COKE MULTIPLAYER GAME

So you know what you wanna say and who you’re saying it to… but HOW are you doing it?!

The way you speak is just as important as what you’re saying. Your tone of voice, your choice of words, even whether you throw in an emoji … it all shapes how people view you.

A witty, playful brand that suddenly sounds stiff and corporate? Confusing.

A serious brand that starts chasing trends with slang and memes? Even worse.

Clear, consistent language builds trust and makes your audience feel like they know you.

Make sure your copy speaks in a voice your audience INSTANTLY recognises. Every sentence is part of the story you’re telling.

      ROWNTREE TREASURE

Every action in the history of the UNIVERSE has a reason… your marketing is no different.

What is your GOAL? Are you chasing brand recognition? Driving sales? Building hype around a one-off campaign?

Without a clear objective your efforts risk becoming noise instead of impact.

Really take the time to understand what you want to get out of your marketing. Maybe you’re at the stage where awareness matters most or you’re ready to double down on conversions.

The point is: knowing your why makes every creative choice more intentional and gives you something to measure success against.

Marketing without purpose is like teaching history without context. Sure, you’ve got the key dates and events, but nobody remembers the story.

      ROWNTREE TREASURE

So you’ve got all of those key parts, now what?

You can know your brand, nail your message, map your audience and set your goals but if you can’t add it all up, you’re missing the point.

At the core of every campaign sits the ultimate question: Why are we really doing this?

Is it growth? Loyalty? Awareness? Revenue? Whatever the answer, every choice should calculate back to that single purpose.

Marketing without a point is just guesswork. And nobody wants to be the kid in class who shows up without doing the homework.

Here’s that golden equation to success:
Brand + Message + Audience + Goals = The Point

So what have we learnt today?!

Marketing can get loud, flashy and full of viral distractions.

These fundamentals are still the core knowledge that any brand needs to stand out.

Get the basics right and suddenly everything else feels less like guesswork and more like passing with top marks.

      Class dismissed.
